Week 5 EJ Prompt

How do you judge the value of expertise on the Web? Does it differ from your notion of expertise in face-to-face settings? Why or why not?

I judge the value of expertise on the Web based on if the information I am receiving is coming from an established and reliable source. It is really hard for me to take anything that is posted online as truth (not that I am paranoid) but I do believe that knowledge gained from the internet should be taken with a grain of salt if it is coming from a self-proclaimed "expert". Something that stands out to me when judging the value of expertise when I find things online are previous articles posted on the subject and publications on reliable sources such as MSN, CNN, or other news sources. A short bio about the person also helps me in accepting the information as well as recommendations and reviews by others. When it comes to face to face settings, it really doesn't differ all that much, I still rely on reviews from others about the person. However, there is a human element that makes me feel at ease when a person is confident in what he/she is explaining to me and has the evidence to back it up such as previous work on the matter and if they are licensed in what they are teaching.
